This Shipping Company Just Began Service to Two Cuban Ports

The channels continue growing

In a testament to the strengthening commercial relations between the United States and Cuba, shipping company SC Line has begun service between Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades and the Cuban seaports of Mariel and Santiago, according to a report by the Sun Suntinel.

The company’s Caroline Russ vessel – carrying shipping containers, vehicles, breakbulk, and other cargo – made its first stop in Cuba this Sunday, and will continue to do so every two weeks, on a route that also includes stops in Panama and Colombia.

"We're ready to respond to customer volume. We could add bigger ships, more ships or weekly service if needed," said Jose Pardo, chief marketing officer from company offices in Panama.

Shipments from to Cuba have long been limited due to the United States’ embargo against the island, though trade between the countries has grown since the Obama administration’s December 2014 announcement of a new policy of engagement with Cuba.

The new policies also allow for the sale of telecom product in Cuba, and impose fewer restrictions on travel to the island.
